As a group, our main objective is to try and meet the aims of the Scout Association. We believe that Scouting should be available and offered to everybody, we aim to do this by offering children, young people and adults alike the opportunity to work their way through each of the four or the five sections offered by the Scout Association. These are Beavers (ages 6 to 8), Cubs (ages 8 to 10), Scouts (ages 10 to 14) and Explorers (ages 14 to 18)

We are based in the village of Old Costessey, which is about 5 miles outside the City of Norwich, Norfolk on a site of just over an acre with a river frontage to the River Wensum. We are always trying to make the best use of the site as possible by offering varied and new activities.

You can find out more information about the different sections, activities that the group can offer, how to join and how to volunteer by browsing the website.

Scouts Enjoy Sub Aqua Adventure

scuba_1When the opportunity came up to try scuba diving in a heated indoor swimming pool, the members of the 16th Norwich Scout troop jumped at the chance.

During the evening of Friday 26th November 2010, 16 Scouts attended the Scuba Diving session in Taverham. After the Scouts were given a short introduction to the sport, they were divided up in pairs and kitted out with a mask, oxygen cylinder & flippers.

After running through the basics of wearing the equipment, each scout sat on the bottom of the pool with the instructor to make sure that their mask hadn't steamed up and that they we happy with breathing through the regulator underwater.

The scouts then swam the length of the 15m pool to the 2.3m deep end where they tried to perfect the skills they had learnt. After swimming back to the shallow end again it was time for the next scout to have a go.

None of the Scouts had done scuba diving in the past, with a few trying snorkelling while on holiday.

Everyone had a great time and said that they would definitely try scuba diving again.

Further photos from the scuba diving can be seen in the Photo Gallery.

16th Norwich & 1st Cawston Scouts - Norjam's Got Talent Winners

Adam Wright, Jack Wright (16th Norwich) & Emma Holman (1st Cawston) got together a few weeks before NorJam after hearing about the 'NorJam's Got Talent' competition.  After experimenting with a few songs, the trio decided to go with a song made famous by Scouting for Girls, She's So Lovely.

Since Emma was the lead singer, the lyrics were slightly changed from 'She's so Lovely, to 'He's so Lovely', and after a number of practices in the 16th's mess tent it was off to the auditions.  This was no obstacle, with news that they were through to one of the three semi final's some hours later, which was to be held on the stage in the main arena.

The trio sailed through their semi-final audition with two other acts from their semi final group and were now destined for the final, which would see nine different and varying acts.  At the final it was announced that there would be three acts going through to the closing ceremony where the overall winner would be decided by the audience.

Adam, Jack and Emma, now known as 'Emma and the Wright Brothers' had nothing to worry about, as they and two other acts were voted by the judges to perform at the closing ceremony on Friday evening. As the closing ceremony dawned on Friday evening, all three acts rather nervous and each wondering how they could go the extra mile to win the support of the 5,000 Scouts and Guides which attended.  After three excellent performances, the time had come for the results and well in the lead with a magnificent 109dB recorded from the cheers, Emma and the Wright Brothers were pronounced the winners of NorJam's Got Talent 2010!
